Scouting offers skills for life according to Bear Grylls

“People know me as an adventurer, mountaineer and Chief Scout, maybe even as a TV presenter. But, for me, my most important role is as a father to my three sons Jesse, Marmaduke and Huckleberry.

As a dad, you’re never handed a clear job description, unfortunately, but this top 50 offers a pretty good guide.

It’s great to see the list include crucial skills like teaching kids how to swim, how to tie their shoe laces, playing football and mending punctures. They’re all important basics which will ensure their safety, health and happiness.

But most importantly we need to help their children learn skills for life. At the Scouts, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to develop the skills they need to succeed. Whether that’s practical skills like navigation or fire lighting, or employability and character skills like initiative, resilience, decision making, independence and team-working; in other words, the qualities that make all the difference.

There’s also one slight worry about this list – there is an almost an equal number of indoor pursuits – games consoles, computers, TV – as there are outdoor pursuits. What about teaching our kids how to climb or ride bikes? Or installing in them a greater sense of discipline and self-reliance by taking them into the great outdoors?

Parents have a responsibility to keep their children active too. A third of young people in the UK leaving primary school are now overweight or obese, putting them at greater risk of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

I think we’ve yet to strike the right balance here. If we are to teach our children the skills they’ll need for a long, happy life we always need to be learning how to be better dads too.

Children need positive role models – if we are active, generous with our time, inquisitive about learning new skills and driven by a great set of values, then our children will want to do the same. Being a great dad is one way to do this. Becoming a volunteer in Scouting is another!”
